June 28th, 2005 — Due to the growing demand, the Canadian Cancer Society held its annual Relay For Life on two separate days at two venues this year. The first of which was held Friday June 10th, at the Nepean Sportsplex, the second Relay For Life event was held Friday, June 17th at Millennium Park in Orleans. Both events began at dusk and continued throughout the night.
The 12 hour event got underway with a survivor victory lap. Cancer survivors take the stage to walk the first lap of the Relay For Life to celebrate their courage and strength in their struggle to battle cancer. This lap gives survivors the opportunity to share their success in the battle against cancer, and give hope to those who are living with cancer. Following this the luminary ceremony will take place. Luminaries are candles in bags with the names of individuals who have battled through cancer as well as those who have lost the battle against the deadly disease. After each luminary is lit the event will begin, the luminaries will provide light and inspiration to those who will walk throughout the night. Team members will take turns walking or running around the track for a total of 12 hours.
InterACTIVE Nutrition International for the second year in a row donated protein bars to help the participants make it through the night. In total, the two locations raised close to one million dollars and had a total of 280 teams participate. The money raised during the event will go directly to cancer research.
